The « Profile of Benin, Investing in Neutrality in Land Degradation …… » is developed by Global Mechanism of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) for potential investors. The value of investing in Sustainable Land Management (SLM) is justified by its ability to make decisive contributions to the achievement of the priority targets related to nine Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the objectives of the Government Action Program (PAG) and other commitments under the Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), in this case the UNCCD.
Indeed, in 2017, the UNCCD Global Mechanism supported Benin, along with other country Parties, in defining its Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) targets in line with SDG target 15.3 of SDG 15.
The UNCCD is the custodian of Target 15.3. In this framework, the twelfth Conference of Parties (COP 12) defined the concept of NDT and developed in 2017 a scientific conceptual framework to facilitate the definition of national NDT targets.
Benin’s Profile provides informations for investors on a number of indicators, including LDN indicators and economics of land degradation (ELD) in Benin compared to regional and global situations.
The National Fund for the Environment and Climate (FNEC) will facilitate, among others, the process of identification and development of transformative projects launched by the Global Mechanism and which will allow the achievement of SDG 15. In view of To reach target 15.3 and other targets and SDGs, Benin needs to identify transformative projects to scale up SLM.
